Flagstaff: Adventure Central, Arizona

If you are looking for a fantastic adventure holiday then Flagstaff could be the perfect base from which to undertake your adventures. Set in the heart of scenic Northern Arizona, Flagstaff is a base not just for the famous natural wonder of the Grand Canyon which lies around 90 minutes to the north – as if that were not enough, it is also just an hour or so from the red rocks of Sedona, just to the east lie the Anasazi ruins of Wupatki National Monument and to the west you will find the San Francisco Mountains. Also nearby is the otherworldly Sunset Crater, where Apollo astronauts trained for their missions.

This alpine mountain sanctuary is bliss after the heat of the south-western deserts. It is the ultimate city for outward bound pursuits, all year round. Camping, hiking, biking, horse riding, rafting, kayaking or climbing are all on offer nearby. There are a huge variety of options for your own personal Arizona adventure.

Flagstaff has a population of 60,222. It is a haven for the eco conscious students of Northern Arizona University and a bolt-hole for city-weary people from Phoenix. It is also right on-trend as an adventure and eco-tourism centre and has a very modern and trendy vibe that keeps it fresh. Somehow in spite of the constant influx of rather wealthy visitors, it has managed to remain unpretentious, lively and great fun. There are a number of good but affordable places to buy food and drink after a hard day out and about and as you would expect from a student town, there is a pretty good, low key and unfussy nightlife.

But the city itself is not the point of coming here. Flagstaff is really just a perfectly pleasant base for seeing what you really came here to see – the dramatic and beautiful surrounding landscape. Most people will begin, of course, with the Grand Canyon. Many people just view the Canyon from the Rim but to have a proper adventure you will have to venture beyond the rim, hiking down to the Colorado River far below. Explore also the other nearby Canyons and geological and topographical features. To get a different sense of the canyon and see it from an entirely different angle, why not take a rafting or kayaking trip along the Colorado River? There are many such trips arranged by a huge number of operators in and around Flagstaff. Or you could really push the boat out and take to the skies for a helicopter tour, to see the dramatic scenery from above.

It would be a shame, however, to restrict your explorations to this famous canyon when there is so much else to be seen and adventured in nearby. Hikes abound through the Kaibab Forest and into the beautiful San Francisco Peaks, while south lies the desert areas and the red rocks to view or to climb around Sedona. From Flagstaff there are also myriad cycling trails to satisfy even the most energetic and advanced of cyclists.

So come to Flagstaff, Arizona, and let the adventure begin!
