Hvar town is the largest settlement on the island and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Adriatic. It can get busy during peak season, but it is easy to see why so many are drawn to this lovely town. There are beautiful mediaeval streets to explore, centred round a picturesque harbour. Don't miss the town square, or the Cathedral of St. Stephen, and be sure to climb up to visit the Spanjola fortress, where stunning views are your reward for the tiring climb. In the evening, go for a meal in one of Hvar Town's fine restaurants before discovering the chic cocktail scene in bars around the town. Backpackers, mega-yacht owners, celebrities and paparazzi rub shoulders in the famously egalitarian night life here. It has been a favoured destination for the rich and famous for many years. Where else might you see Tom Cruise cruising the bay, Giorgio Armani tucking in at his favourite restaurant, or Beyonce taking a morning stroll with her daughter, who is actually an honorary citizen of Hvar! If the party has only just started, then you can follow the crowds offshore and continue the fun on an offshore island, where the drinking, music and mayhem will go on until dawn.

Away from the town, it is easy to find a quiet cove or mountain walk and escape from the hustle and bustle. Swim in the warm, clear waters, bathe in the sun, but don't neglect the interior of the island. You will be wowed by the fragrant beauty of Hvar's famous lavender fields amongst the rolling hills, farms and vineyards.

Those who want to glimpse the fascinating past of this island should head for the archaeological site, Grapčeva špilja, where details were revealed of a unique way of life found here. Also of much interest are the varied sights of the historic villages of Stari Grad, Milna, Zaraće and Jelsa, and the Grapčeva cave, an important prehistoric site.

Let Hvar welcome you on your Adriatic holiday, live as the rich and famous do and come and experience the varied wonders of this jewel-like island for yourself.
