There are many different sorts of cycling holiday and before you decide what sort you want to go on you need to determine what sort of cyclist you are. Are you a get there quick and push yourself to achieve great goals type of person or are you the sort of person who likes to take your time and smell the flowers – literally or otherwise?

Are you going to be getting your hands dirty and fixing any problems with your bike en route or are you going to need to get someone to look at it for you? Are you a road cyclist or do you prefer mountain biking over rugged terrain without seeing another soul for miles? Deciding on what sort of trip you would like will help you in deciding what sort of luggage you will have to bring with you. Will you pack your bike and panniers to the gunwales and make sure you have everything you could conceivably need for your journey or will you travel light and pare down your belongings to the smallest possible weight before you go? What sort of mileage do you see yourself doing in an average day? (Be realistic – things happen, tiredness levels wax and wane – try out your intended mileage not just one or twice but everyday for a week to see how it would feel. Whether you do only a few miles a day or a hundred doesn't matter, what matters is that you have thought about it beforehand, determined what you can realistically achieve, and then plotted a route that fits with your daily mileage without too many compromises and with a little wiggle room if things don't quite go to plan.

There is room for spontaneaity but you should also be sure to do your research because nothing goes wrong faster than a trip that has been poorly planned. Things will still go wrong if you do plan – but you will be able to deal with them far more effectively. If you are travelling in open country or wilderness, make sure that you have planned in such a way that you will not run out of water and be unable to find any nearby. Food you can do without for a time, water you cannot, especially if you are travelling in a hot country or in summery weather. If you are travelling with other people, have you taken into account their keenness and fitness level as well as your own? There is nothing worse than being held back unexpectedly by a somewhat reluctant or unprepared cycling partner (unless it is being left behind yourself). If you are travelling with someone else and think you will travel at rather different speeds then it might be a good idea to agree a rendezvous point for the end of each day rather than constantly trying to keep together. Pick your travel partners carefully – this can really make or break a cycling holiday, wherever you go.
