Germany is a country of smallish cities and towns. There are only three cities here that have over a million inhabitants, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. But there are many delightful smaller cities in Germany, many of them with historic cores with many attractions and plenty with a lively and young feel. Those with Universities often have lots going on and a youthful, cosmopolitan atmosphere that stops them from feeling at all provincial. Here are five attractive university towns in Germany that you should be sure to make the time to visit:

Heidelberg

Number one on any list of lively University towns has to be Heidelberg. There is a very international feel to the town and yet it retains a strong sense of history and tradition. There are the beautiful romantic ruins of the castle, plenty of hiking trails around and an historic old town with beautiful cobbled streets and squares. Students cycle around the town and there is a cheerful sense of intellectual thought and progress that can be enjoyed by everyone who visits.

Tübingen

Another historic and traditional University town that has a fresh and lively atmosphere is this one, also on the river Neckar. Here you will also see the old town centre with its narrow alleys, steep steps and steep roof-lines and there is another castle to visit. A calm yet busy nightlife helps this quaint looking city from becoming stale and staid.

Freiburg

This is not only a lively University town it is also Germany's sunniest city. It has plenty to see and do and consistently tops league tables for live-satisfaction and happiness surveys. Join the students and others living here for a holiday to find out why they all love being here so very much. This is a picture-postcard old town surrounded by wooded hills. The delightful scenery is like something from a fairytale. All combines to make this an instantly likeable place.

Jena

This town in former communist East Germany has a long and venerable history. Goethe and Schiller both worked at this University for a time along with several other great German intellectual thinkers. This is a science centre with a strong research program and that interest is explored in museums found in the town. While not as unspoiled as Weimar in some respects, Jena has large pockets of charm and a great nightlife. Renting bikes here is a great way to see the highlights of the city.

Erlangen and Nuremberg

The city of Erlangen is dominated by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, while the larger city of Nuremberg nearby houses other departments of the same institution. Both cities are delightful places to visit. While this area, and of course Nuremberg in particular, have been overshadowed in the past by their Nazi history, there is much more to these cities and there are a number of attractions in this region of Bavaria, both natural and man made. Visit these two lively University towns and if you have time, others in the region, to experience something of the distinct Bavarian culture. Kick back with a beer and chat to friendly locals in a traditional beer garden.
