The Croatian Island of Vis

Unlike many of the other Croatian islands, Vis is a haven for the independent traveller, more or less devoid of package deals and mass tourism. It is largely unspoiled and has not suffered by a mass invasion by summer tourists, though it has attracted quite high numbers of eco travellers, naturalists and adventurers since it opened to tourists in 1989. Before then it was closed to the public for military reasons due to its strategically important position in the Adriatic.

Vis, furthest west of Croatia's inhabited islands, is dominated by three large peaks, Hum (583m), Sveti Duh (563 m) and Mali Hum (514m). Its steep slopes are therefore attractive to hill walkers, who appreciate the stunning views that can be gained out over the Adriatic. Around the coastline, Vis has many beautiful coves and beaches, both sandy and made up of small pebbles.

Many lovely beaches and independent places to stay are found along the coastline away from the two main settlements of Vis Town and Komisa. Both of these towns are historic gems, brimming with ancient history and a vibrant and unique culture. But to truly get a sense of the wild location and natural beauty of this island you should head out of these slightly busier settlements.

Sandy beaches near Vis town are found at Stoncica, Milna and Zaglav, three breathtaking bays that have to be seen to be believed. Another lovely bay with a pebble beach is found at Srebrna. Also near Vis town is Ravnik island, where you can see the spectacular scenic wonder of the 'green cave'.

From the other side of the island, at Komisa, there are also a range of lovely beaches. From Komisa, a boat trip to some of the other outlying islands is an excellent idea. Whether you head for the unspoiled beauty of one of these uninhabited gems to have a remote, idyllic picnic, or take a boat trip or a diving excursion to the Blue Cave of Bisevo, which also has a beautiful sandy beach, you are sure to find a divine spot all to yourself by just walking a short distance.

Historians will love the many sites of Vis Town and Komisa and other age-old settlements across the island. There is much to learn about Vis' varied past and many beautiful architectural delights from a range of eras.

Then, at the end of the day when you are tired, you can relax and enjoy a wonderful meal at one of Vis' many relaxed eateries and wash it down with a glass or two of the famous wine – which has been counted since antiquity as one of the best wines in the region.

If you are looking for a fairly accessible island that encompasses all the best elements of the Adriatic islands in one neat package, and yet does not become overcrowded during the summer months, Vis may just be the perfect place for your Croatian vacation. So head to Split, and set out on a voyage to this Adriatic paradise.
