Barcelona is well known as an avant garde, artistic and cultural city with a vibrant creative scene and some buzzing night life. But you could be forgiven for thinking that this city really does have it all when you learn that Barcelona and its environs also have a range of sandy beaches to enjoy. What more could you want? Here is a list of some of the beaches at or near Barcelona to help you choose where to go for your sun, sea and surf during your stay in this marvellous city:

Barceloneta
This city beach is busy, dirty and riddled with tourists but in spite of all that, and rather surprisingly, it still has a great appeal. This beach may not be the place to go for relaxation, but it certainly is entertaining.
Nova Icaria
This beach mostly attracts a very young crowd. It is good for watersports and is located close to the Olympic marina and observatory. Why not come here to try a spot of kayaking, windsurfing or another beach-based recreational activity?
Bogatell Beach
This beach is about 15 minutes walk from Bogatell Metro Station. It is cleaner and calmer than Barceloneta beach though expect to see a lot of silicon, tattoos and big sunglasses.
Mar Bella Beach
This beach has a nudist stretch discretely partitioned off by a large sand dune. This is also a favourite LGBT hangout and on Sundays throughout the summer there are late-night raves held here.
Ocata Beach
This beach, just half an hour by train from Barcelona, to the north, is much quieter and its gorgeous golden sands are pristine. It is very flat and there is always plenty of space to spread out and relax.
Caldetes Beach
Without frills, Caldetes Beach is still a pleasant place to be, all the better because it is far less crowded than some of the other beaches within reach of the city. It is just a short ride to the north of Barcelona.
St Pol de Mar Beach
This beach is an hour from the city but is well worth a mention because it is a lovely stretch of sand sandwiched between clear waters and rugged, picturesque hills. The nudist cove here is a particularly picturesque and enchanting spot.
Castelldefels Beach
This enormous beach stretches for 5km just fifteen minutes from Barcelona's city centre. Unfortunately, for all its space, this stretch of tempting sand can get just as busy as the city centre beaches.
Garraf Beach
Five minutes further on by train from Castelldefels you can get to Garraf Beach. This pretty little bay is quite a lot quieter and it is easy to walk to from the train station and has excellent facilities.
Sitges Beach
This modish LGBT location is just half an hour from Barcelona's city centre. The town is friendly, relaxed and liberal, the town beach can be a bit noisy and sometimes windy but the area to the north of the church on the seafront is calmer in both senses of the word.
