Best Beaches in Ireland

The wild and exciting Irish coast may not be the first place you think of when you think about beach holidays. But though it may not be the warmest place to go to enjoy the seaside, Ireland has plenty of spectacular, beautiful beaches that are all the better for being largely uncrowded. If you are thinking about a visit to the Emerald Isle, then you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a lovely beach on which to relax, picnic or play. Here are a few of the very best beaches to be found in this beautiful country:

Skerries, near Dublin

This town was once a small fishing village. One of the lovely beaches on Ireland's busier east coast, Skerries offers a safe and picturesque beach overlooked by a row of colourful houses. The pretty harbour offers a range of delightful pubs and restaurants and off in the distance you can see Rockabill Lighthouse. What is more, this peaceful town is just a short hop and a skip from the capital city, Dublin.

Baginbun Head, County Wexford

This beach is located in the sunniest part of Ireland, in the far south east. This area is well known for having a higher number of sunny days than any other part of the country. In this region you will be spoiled for choice and there are a large number of lovely quiet coves with pure white sand. Visit Hook Lighthouse and Tinern Abbey nearby.

Derrynane, Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is unfortunately somewhat over-run by coach tours, but you can easily avoid the worst of them and enjoy the spectacular scenery at your own pace. There are several lovely beaches along the coast here, including the lovely one at Derrynane House, looking out on Abbey Island.

Kilcummin, County Mayo

Leaping northwards, Kilcummin, in County Mayo, you will find another one of Ireland's best and wildest beaches. This windy strand with lovely peachy-gold sand has a beautiful backdrop of the Brandon Mountains and gives a true sense of being on the edge of the world.

Ballymastocker Bay, Fanad Pennisula, County Donegal

Far, far north, on the Fanad Peninsula at the top of the country lies this wild and windswept paradise. You are likely to have this beautiful spot all to yourself – the only company being the wildlife and a few cows. The perfect spot to get away from it all in spectacular scenery. This is one of the many lovely, isolated and undisturbed beaches of Donegal.

Whichever section of the Irish coastline you choose to visit, you will likely find many breathtaking beaches. It is also likely that you will have those beaches more or less to yourself for most of the year and they will never be crowded even in the middle of summer. So come to Ireland and see the wild and natural, unspoiled coastline for yourself.
