Five Amazing Places to Camp in Arizona

Many people will already be familiar with Arizona as the state which contains one of the great wonders of the natural world – the Grand Canyon. Millions flock each year to the busy South Rim and a few other concentrated spots within the state, but many overlook the hundreds of other delightful spots to camp out in this state. Here are just five of the many amazing places to camp in astounding Arizona:

Toroweap (Backcountry), Grand Canyon:

If you are looking for a campsite with a view then this offers one of the very best in the state. You will have to make an effort to reach this backcountry campsite but once you are there, looking over the sheer precipice to the Colorado River far below, you will be glad that you did. This is one of the best campgrounds within the Grand Canyon National Park to escape the crowds.

Lockett Meadow, San Francisco Peaks:

This verdant meadow located at 7000 ft on the side of the San Francisco Peaks is the perfect place to base yourself if you would like to hike in the Inner Basin and/or climb to the top of Mount Humphreys, the highest peak in Arizona. Hike or bike through the largest stand of aspen trees in the state or simply relax and watch the wildlife – elk, deer, maybe even a bear may make an appearance here.

North Rim, Grand Canyon:

More natural and unspoiled, and less crowded than the frenetic South Rim of the Grand Canyon, the North Rim offers a more laid-back, relaxed and cooler way to view the Canyon. Summertime temperatures are much lower here, at this higher altitude, than at the South Rim, so can offer respite from the heat. Be warned though, in winter the road to get here is sometimes impassable and you can expect some dramatic weather conditions. However, come from late Spring to Autumn and you can enjoy the beauty and wildlife free from the mass of humanity.

East Rim Overlook, Marble Canyon, Kaibab National Forest:

Wild, natural campsites are found on the clifftop with fantastic views out over Marble Canyon, without the crowds found at the main Grand Canyon sites. Watch goshawks swirl and dive from their homes in the old growth ponderosa pines towering overhead. Explore the Marble Canyon, which becomes the Grand Canyon further downstream, and find natural pitches in this area which is so often overlooked for its larger and somehow brasher neighbour.

Alama Canyon (Backcountry), Organ Pipe National Monument:

This is the only backcountry campsite within the National Monument and there are only four pitches. Here you can contemplate the surroundings without any crowds, as the sun goes down over the startling blood-red rock and the spikey cacti that give the place its name. Visit the Organ Pipe Visitor Centre to enquire about backcountry camping and be sure that you are prepared for the heat of the hike to get here in the Sonoran Desert.
