Scenic Road Cycle Routes in Massachusetts

Massachusetts is one of those states that reveals itself to visitors a little bit at a time. Many choose to take scenic drives throughout the state but for something a little different, why not consider hopping on your bike and taking to the roads. There are many scenic regions of Massachusetts in which to cycle – here are three excellent places to start:

Mohawk Trail

This scenic 69 mile trail was once a Mohawk Native American footpath, though it has altered over time to allow new modes of travel. In 1914, Mohawk trail was declared the first scenic auto route in the United States. Today, it is still a delightful cycle or driving route and huge stretches of it are also perfect for those hiking on foot.

The scenic route takes you on small roads through lush forest, across meandering rivers and through beautiful and historic town centres, where you will find no shortage of fascinating cultural things to see and do. Whether you are looking for outward bound excitement or artistic relaxation and museums, this route has something for everyone.

You will undoubtedly find that you want to take your time and do justice to this region of western Massachusetts, which is beautiful all year, but most beautiful when leaves change in the Fall.

If the Mohawk Trail leaves you wanting more – there are plenty of other scenic byways and trails in this western part of the state. Basing yourself in Adams or nearby would leave you centrally placed to enjoy the many scenic wonders of the area.

Cape Ann

Cape Ann is Massachusett's 'other cape', often overshadowed by the more famous Cape Cod, a little to the south. A cycle ride on the coastal roads here will give you a refreshing taste of the breezy and rugged New England coastline. See pristine beaches and historic lighthouses, and charming towns and villages replete with New England charm.

Along this short 21 miles route you will see museums, including the Essex Shipbuilding Museum the Hammond Castle Museum, Salem Witch Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, one of the oldest art museums in the state.

Be sure to get off your bike for long enough to eat some of the delicious, fresh, local seafood. Relax on one of the quiet beaches, or take to the waters for a whale watching expedition.

Cape Cod is one of the most famous parts of Massachusetts and probably needs no introduction. Old King's Highway is the perfect road on which to drive or cycle to see the charms of this prominent cape. The route is 65 miles long and takes you through some characterful and charming towns each with their own distinct personality.

Whether you are more interested in the unspoiled beaches, rocks and wildlife of Cape Cod, or would rather spend your time enjoying its genteel cultural attractions, museums, art galleries and antique stores, the Cape Cod coastal route is the perfect place to take a leisurely cycle trip.
